First Time E.I.T. Applicants

All individuals and organizations practicing engineering in the Yukon are required to be licensed by Engineers Yukon in adherence to the Engineering Profession Act of the Yukon.

The guidelines and requirements for membership are set out in the Engineering Profession Act, Regulations and Bylaws.

Engineers-in-Training applicants are generally individuals who have recently graduated or individuals who are currently working on gaining the required experience. Applicants with an accredited Engineering Degree and less than four years of engineering experience may apply as an Engineer-in-Training in the Yukon. Academic qualifications will be assessed on our behalf by the Association of Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Alberta (APEGA). An E.I.T. can use the title “Engineer-in-Training” or “E.I.T.” and gain the experience required for licensure as a P.Eng. as long they are working under the supervision and control of a licensed Professional Engineer or Licensee.

An E.I.T. can practice engineering in the Yukon and gain the experience required for registration as a P.Eng. as long as they are working under the supervision and control of a licensed Professional Member or Licensee. Please see below for more information on the experience required for licensure as a P.Eng.

All First time E.I.T. applications must include:

Please review the First Time Applicant Information Guide and submit your application to: registration@engineersyukon.ca

Engineers Yukon will then provide the applicant with a verification code that they will enter into APEGA’s online application system in order to complete the full application process. The verification code will allow the applicant to submit an application without payment to APEGA.

Please note: if your post-secondary degree(s) are from a university outside of Canada, you must obtain an academic assessment of your academic records which will incur an additional fee once you start the online application process. APEGA uses World Education Services (WES) to obtain a WES-ICAP Course by Course report. WES is an academic-assessment agency designated by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada to provide educational credential assessments for degrees earned outside of Canada. APEGA will not accept any non-Canadian academic documents outside of the WES process. Depending on your qualifications, additional exams may be required. All First time P.Eng. and L.L.(Eng.) applicants will be required to write and pass the National Professional Practice Exam (NPPE).

Once your application has been reviewed by APEGA as well as our Board of Examiners you will receive an email with further instructions on how to complete the application process. We do not have set dates for the Board of Examiner meetings.

For further information, you can also contact APEGA directly using registration@apega.ca or using their toll-free phone number: 800-661-7020.

GAINING EXPERIENCE FOR REGISTRATION AS A P.ENG.

Once an individual is registered as an E.I.T. they can start gaining experience towards their P.Eng. application. APEGA, on behalf of Engineers Yukon, assesses work experience using competency-based assessment (CBA) for Professional Engineer applications.

For more information and descriptions of the 22 Key Competencies and their Indicators, please follow the link below:
https://www.apega.ca/apply/membership/professional-member/work-experience/engineers/competency-based-assessment-tool/competencies-and-indicators.

APEGA does not have a mechanism to upload work experience as it is gained. However, if an individual would like to record their experience, they can use the Competency Based System Experience Tracking Tool linked below as a guide:
https://www.apega.ca/apply/membership/professional-member/work-experience/engineers/competency-self-assessment-worksheet

Please note: Any summer or coop work experience gained during the 3rd and 4th year of your Bachelor's degree program may be used towards your competency requirements up to a maximum of twelve months before graduation. A thesis-based Master’s degree may also count towards experience for up to twelve months but the Master’s has to be awarded before it will be considered.

Applications are assessed on an individual basis by members of the APEGA Board of Examiners, therefore no determination on education can be made until an applicant’s file has been reviewed by one or more of the examiners.

For further information, you can also contact APEGA directly using registration@apega.ca or using their toll-free phone number: 800-661-7020.
