Yukon Engineering Bonanza

In 2024, The Engineers Yukon Outreach Committee expended their signature annual event, the Bridge Building Competition, to be bigger, better, and more inclusive of other engineering discipline. The Yukon Engineering Bonanza aims to have the competition as a centerpiece with additional booths set up by industry to showcase their disciplines (i.e. Civil, Mechanical, Computer, Electrical, Environmental, etc.). The event will be a day of interactive activities, prizes, and learning about all engineering has to offer. It will be open to the public and is taking place on Saturday, April 26th, 2025, at the Canada Games Center in the ATCO Arena.

The Bridge Building Competition can be done individually or in teams. Students will learn the fundamentals of structures and the engineering design process. The Bridge Building Rules and additional resources (such as presentations that can be used in the classroom) are available in the Teacher Resources section below. Teams will need standard wooden stir sticks, dental flow and glue to build bridges, which will then be tested to destruction in dramatic fashion. The bridges with the best strength to weight ratio win.

Registration Form

Drop-off of completed bridges will be April 25th after 4pm at the Canada Games Center, in front of the ATCO Arena for weigh-in prior to the event. If this time does not work, please reach out to outreach@engineersyukon.ca to make alternative arrangements. We will create and post a testing schedule and times shortly. If students are present when their bridge is tested, they can collect their bridge (or what's left!) should they want to, otherwise the bridges will be disposed of following the event.

Sponsors and Exhibitors

For this event, the Engineers Yukon Outreach Committee is seeking sponsors and exhibitors to help make the Yukon Engineering Bonanza a success. Please view the attached letter for more information regarding the event, and the sponsorship and exhibition opportunities.

Volunteers

We are seeking volunteers for setup, tear-down, and bridge testing. This would be a great opportunity for senior students to get some volunteer hours and additional one on one time with our engineers! If you're an engineer, this is a great chance to meet the aspiring youth of our Territory. Please consider volunteering, these events can't be run without you.
